2006 Variety Performance Results

Cargill’s goal is to provide growers with accurate information on the performance of our Victory™ hybrids and varieties. In order to achieve this goal, field data was collected from 52 trial sites across Western Canada. We do not believe that single strip trials can provide accurate yield information due to the variability of the field. Therefore, Cargill is setting quality standards by providing only variety performance data from replicated trials. During 2006, Cargill coordinated 4 different types of trials so that the Victory hybrids and varieties could be tested under various environmental and soil conditions.

Victory Performance Trials (VPT’s)

During 2006, 34 growers across Western Canada actively participated in Cargill’s Victory Performance Trial Program. Using their own field equipment and canola management practices, growers seeded two replications for each variety the length of the field. In each trial Victory hybrids were compared to 45H21, a leading commodity hybrid. At harvest the grower harvested strips and yields were measured with precision using weigh wagons.

AgriSkills Trials

Cargill has enlisted the AgriSkills grower team (3rd party) to evaluate new varieties and compare them to leading commodity varieties. Using their own field equipment and normal crop management practices they replicate each variety 4 times with each strip approximately 2½ acres. There were 4 sites across Western Canada in 2006.

Research Strip Trials (RST's)

RST’s are setup to show current and new varieties to producers and retailers and to collect various data including yield. They are managed using our smaller field equipment that offers precision seeding and yield measurement. Each variety is replicated twice in blocks measuring 15’ by 90’. RST's were conducted on 15 sites across Western Canada in 2006.

Research Demonstration Trials

Demo Trials are small plot trials that are replicated four times and are conducted to evaluate our new varieties beside leading commercial varieties. They measure 5’ by 25’ and are also managed using our smaller scale field equipment. Demo Trials were conducted on 15 sites across Western Canada in 2006.
